About the Residency
The Ensemble Playwright Lab (EPL) is a residency program in which the playwright engages with Letter of Marque's (LOM) ensemble to create, develop, or reimagine a piece of work; which will be presented to the public at the end of the residency.
There will be two residencies: Fall & Spring. Two playwrights, one for each residency, will be selected to work with our ensemble once a week, for a total of 21 hours of collaboration and discovery.
And the best part? The EPL is FREE to the playwrights!
Each residency is uniquely tailored to provide playwrights with the opportunity to collaborate closely with LOM’s artistic directors and professional multi-disciplinary ensemble.
This experimental process of creation and development is designed to welcome the playwright into the rehearsal room through active participation in devised and improvisational explorations.
The goals and outcomes of each residency are mutually determined by both LOM and the playwright.

A look inside the process of developing Lila Perlman’s de-construction and re-conception of Euripides’ classic tragedy Iphigeneia at Aulis. Set during the Trojan War, the story of Iphigeneia reckons with how much a single life is worth. Told through a series of tableaus Iphigeneia (and Some of Her Parts) explores the power of movement onstage, and questions why humanity is so often determined to destroy life rather than preserve it.

Lila Perlman is a Seattle-bred, NYC-based playwright, performer and devised theatre maker. Her short play The Golem and the Maharal’s Wife won the Kennedy Center’s 2020 Gary Garrison National Ten-Minute Play Award. Lila was the 2022 playwright in residence with Letter of Marque (and is thrilled to be back!). She is a founding member of Soft Brain Theatre Company, a modern-day Commedia Dell’Arte troupe. Core focuses of Lila’s work are the female presence in history, the crucial interrelationship between humans and the natural world, and the universal truths nestled in our mythologies. Submission Guidelines
The Ensemble Playwright Lab (EPL) is a residency program for NYC-based playwrights to engage with Letter of Marque's (LOM) ensemble of actors, musicians, dancers, designers, and dramaturgs to create, develop, or reimagine a piece of work. This experimental process of creation and development is designed to welcome the playwright into the rehearsal room through active participation in devised and improvisational explorations. The goals and outcomes of each residency are mutually determined by both LOM and the playwright.
Playwrights are chosen using an anonymous submission process. Each entrant is asked to create an alias so as to mask their identity. Entrants are also required to omit all mentions of names of previous collaborators and the titles of their previous work. The anonymized submissions are then read by a panel consisting LOM Co-Artistic Directors Nolan Kennedy and Scarlet Maressa Rivera, and Guest Dramaturgs. Finalists are scheduled for interviews to determine the participants in this year’s Ensemble Playwright Lab.
This season, LOM will be exploring the theme of DISCOVERY.
For the third season, LOM will proudly offer a $500 honorarium to each playwright chosen for a residency.
There will be two residencies: Fall (Oct.-Nov.) and Spring (March-May). Each residency will consist of 7 consecutive sessions to develop a work with the LOM ensemble. At the end of each residency, there will be a public showing and a facilitated post-showing talkback with the audience, playwright, and cast.
All meetings, rehearsals, and showings will take place in person in Manhattan, NYC unless otherwise arranged.
LOM is striving to amplify more BIPoC and LGBTQIA+ voices. Playwrights from these communities are encouraged to apply.

APRIL LAVALLE
Residency: SPRING 2023
April Lavalle (she/her) is a writer, actor, and Tony Award winning producer based in New York City.
April started her writing career as a humor and satirical columnist for Reductress. Since then, her work has been featured in McSweeneys, Bitch Magazine, Vulture and more. Additionally, she is the author of the children's book, "A Case of the Zaps," published under Abrams Kids. “A Case of the Zaps” works to de-stigmatize anxiety disorders in children. April consulted with the prestigious Child Mind Institute on the work. Her second book is currently in development, once again with Abrams. She is an emerging playwright and has written one full length play, two shorter works, and a pilot.
As an actor, April has appeared on stages throughout the world and on television screens nationwide working in front of the camera on projects for Netflix and HBO, and has worked alongside actors such as Jim Parsons, Billy Eichner and Alec Baldwin. She holds a BA in Theatre Performance from Wagner College and has trained at The Upright Citizens Brigade in sketch and improv. She is a director and actor with the Story Pirates, as well as a member of Good Catch Comedy— the oldest-running musical improv team in New York City. She is a member of both SAG-AFTRA and AEA.
As a co-producer, she is currently represented on Broadway in Hadestown, for which she won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Musical.
April is also a death doula.

CAYENNE DOUGLASS (she/her) has had work developed and/or produced at Ensemble Studio Theatre, Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, Theatre Masters, Fresh Ink Theatre, New Perspectives Theatre Company, Dixon Place, The Tank, Clutch Productions, City Theatre Miami, FEAST: A Performance Series, and Manhattan Repertory Theatre. Cayenne has participated in The First Stage Residency through The Drama League, The Barn Arts Residency, and The Emerging Artists Residency at Tofte Lake. She is an alumnus of The Living Room Theatre Lab, New Perspectives Women’s Work Lab, The BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Book Writing Basics, Company One Theatre’s Volt Lab, and The Exquisite Corpse Company Writers Lab. Currently she’s participating in The Workshop Theatre’s Fall Writing Intensive 2022, BMI Composer/Lyricists Workshop, and of course Letter of Marquee Theatre’s Ensemble Playwrights Lab season 10!

JAKE BRASCH (he/they) is a Brooklyn-based fancy-free queer Jewish clown from Colorado who writes for the stage and screen. Proud member of Ensemble Studio Theatre’s Youngblood, The Farm Theater’s Development Workshop, and The LAByrinth 2020 Intensive Ensemble. They have worked at The New Ohio, the Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Denver Center Theatre Company, The Farm Theater, Eden Theatre Company, The LAByrinth Theatre Company, The Tank, Dixon Place, Curious Theatre Company, Austin Peay University, Pellissippi State, DSA at the Edinburgh Fringe, The 14th St Y, Planet Connections, and NYU-Tisch. He is currently under commission from the EST/Sloan Project and The Farm Theater’s College Collaboration Project.

MARY GLEN FREDRICK (she/her) is a writer, actor, and video editor, hailing mostly from Kansas City. A writer for both theater and film, her plays include Edit Annie (Langham Court/Risk Theatre Modern Tragedy Competition semifinalist, Austin Film Festival Playwriting Competition Second Rounder), fire work, and THESE VIOLENT DELIGHTS. Her first short film, Been So Good (writer/actor) is in post-production, and she is currently developing her first feature film.
A video editor for over ten years, Mary Glen’s work spans many genres and includes music videos, dance films, narrative short films, and a full length documentary about the portrayal of mental health in the media and the resulting societal impact on building or breaking down stigma. RAJENDRA RAMOON MAHARAJ (he/him) is a multi-disciplinary, American theater artist and administrator. Mr. Maharaj’s rich cultural tapestry includes Indian, Caribbean, and African lineage. This has shaped him greatly in his work as a storyteller, arts administrator, and as an advocate for diversity, inclusion, and creating safe-spaces to tell stories that have often been overlooked in the American Theater. He is currently in his first term as the Third Vice-President and founding Chairman for the Equity in the Arts and Culture Committee for the NAACP for the Borough of Brooklyn. He is currently represented by Michael Moore Agency as a director, choreographer, and playwright.
Mr. Maharaj was hailed in The New York Times as one of the most talented directors in New York and his award-winning play Little Rock, which he conceived, wrote, and directed, was recently selected as a New York Times Critics Pick. Ashley Lauren Rogers

ASHLEY LAUREN ROGERS (she/her) is an award winning writer and trans rights activist. She is a current writing fellow of the Trans Theatre Lab, and is the Literary Director for Step1 Theatre Project. She was artist in residence at Middlesex County Vocational Technical School in East Brunswick NJ Winter 2018-2019. Her work has been performed at Dixon Place, MITF, the Brick, and Joe’s Pub and others. Her short play “Becky’s Christmas Wish,” was a finalist for the City Theatre National Short Play Award, in Miami, and her work has been produced in Wisconsin, Cincinatti, New Jersey, Detroit, and Minneapolis. Ashley was featured on Fusion TV’s Peabody Award Nominated Sex.Right.Now, panels for Revry.TV. She has written for Cosmopolitan, The Mary Sue, and is the creator of the Is It Transphobic Podcast.

MATTHEW COLE KELLY (he/him) is a queer playwright, librettist, lyricist, and screenwriter whose work has been produced and developed throughout the US and world, garnering nominations for over a dozen awards. Previous developmental credits include Abingdon Theatre, Luna Stage, Metropolitan Playhouse, HRC Showcase Theatre, the NJ Play Lab, California’s Talk Back Theatre, Loose Change Productions, the Makor Steinhardt Center, Turn Park Art Space, and Occupy Wall Street, among many others.Recently, his play THE GODS OF THE OZARKS received a full production by Dublin’s AboutFACE Theatre, garnering praise from Ireland’s largest national newspaper for “explor[ing] profound questions of life and death with a playful touch.” Future projects include the opera AMI & TAMI, which has been translated into Italian for a winter production at the Teatro Coccia di Novara. Matthew is currently in residence at the NJ Play Lab, where he will debut a 29-hour reading of his new play WE VICTORIANS.
Matthew’s plays have been nominated as finalist or semifinalist for the Abingdon Theatre’s Christopher Brian Wolk Award, the Bloomington Playwright Project’s Woodward/Newman Drama Award, the College of Charleston’s Todd McNerney Playwriting Award, the Association for Theatre in Higher Education’s Award for Excellence in Playwriting (twice), the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference, ScreenCraft’s Stage Play Contest, and the Shakespeare in the Berg Award. His screenplays have been nominated as finalist or semifinalist in ScreenCraft’s Comedy Screenplay Competition (twice), the Cannes Screenplay Contest, the Richmond International Film & Music Festival, the WeScreenplay Diverse Voices Competition, the Los Angeles International Screenplay Competition, the Creative World Awards, the Emerging Screenwriter Awards, and the ISA Fast Track Fellowship.
Matthew studied playwriting at Brown University under the tutelage of Paula Vogel before earning a PhD in Sociomedical Sciences and History from Columbia University. He is a member of the Dramatist Guild and the BMI Lehman Engel Librettist Workshop.

His screenplays have been nominated as finalist or semifinalist in ScreenCraft’s Comedy Screenplay Competition (twice), the Cannes Screenplay Contest, the Richmond International Film & Music Festival, the WeScreenplay Diverse Voices Competition, the Los Angeles International Screenplay Competition, the Creative World Awards, the Emerging Screenwriter Awards, and the ISA Fast Track Fellowship.
Matthew studied playwriting at Brown University under the tutelage of Paula Vogel before earning a PhD in Sociomedical Sciences and History from Columbia University. He is a member of the Dramatist Guild and the BMI Lehman Engel Librettist Workshop.

Kate Douglas (she/her) is a multidisciplinary theatre artist seeking to challenge audiences about the limits of their world through multidisciplinary experiences that center plants and other non-humans. Her work has been performed at Ars Nova, Joe’s Pub and The McKittrick Hotel and developed at Rhinebeck Musicals, The National Theater Institute, the Writer’s Colony at Goodspeed, Artemisia Theatre and HERE Arts Center. She is the recipient of a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council grant in support of her immersive work Extinct and a New Victory LabWorks fellow with her immersive children’s piece Middlemist Red, which will be in residence at SPACE on Ryder Farm this fall. Additional projects include upcoming musicals with Todd Almond, Shayfer James and Grace McLean. As a complement to her artistic practice, she is studying Herbalism at the Gaia School of Healing in Vermont and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy in NYC. In the fall of 2018, she began her Master Naturalist training at Cornell University.

Justin Cimino

Justin Cimino received his BFA in Drama from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. As an actor, has performed Off-Broadway and in many other productions in NYC. He has been a teaching artist for 15 years. He is currently the Education Director and Operations Manager for Zara Aina, a nonprofit organization that brings theater to at-risk communities in Madagascar and the United States. He was hired by UNICEF to use Zara Aina's theater work to mobilize communities in Madagascar to fight polio. He has devised, written, and directed several original shows based on Malagasy folktales, and a Malagasy version of King Lear, with Zara Aina’s Malagasy Youth Company.
He has brought Zara Aina’s work to rural Southern Alabama, building original pageant-style shows with children, teens, adults, and seniors, and bridging disparate communities through theater in this still segregated area. Justin has directed and taught clowning and the devised "moment work" of the Tectonic Theater Project at NYU Tisch, Columbia University, the Studio/NY, Shakespeare in the Square, and the Shakespeare Society. He has workshopped solo work under Austin Pendleton at The Directors Company. He founded his own theater company, Pigeonholed, in 2016, to allow theater artists of all sorts the chance to make the work they want to make, not the work the industry tells them they have to make.

Matt Minnicino is a Manhattan-based, Virginia-born playwright, actor, adaptor, director, and storyteller. He is the recipient of the 2016 Arts & Letters Prize, the 2012 Clay E. Delauney Playwriting Prize, a finalist for the 2017 Jeffrey Melnick New Playwright Award, semifinalist for the 2016 Eugene O'Neill New Plays Conference; member of Pipeline Theatre's 2017-18 PlayLab and Everyday Inferno's 2016 Writer/Director Lab; and recipient of residencies with SPACE on Ryder Farm, Exquisite Corpse, Sugarglass Theatre, and many others; and has been published by The Dionysian, The Dramatist, and HowlRound. His work has been performed or developed in 12 states (and Ireland). He has professionally adapted Chekhov, Gorky, Strindberg, Ibsen, Homer, Aeschylus, Sophocles, and more. Cherry Lou Sy is currently a MFA Playwriting candidate at Brooklyn College with Mac Wellman and Erin Courtney. She wrote and directed a triptych piece on death and mourning with an Asian-American lens in #AmericaAF festival at the New Ohio Theater produced by Jessica Almasy and Ann Marie Dorr. Her work has been developed in La Mama Experiments, Rising Circle Theater Collective, Brooklyn College and Primary Stages' ESPA. She was a finalist for the 2017 Bay Area Playwrights Festival and has been nominated for the 2018 Cherry Lane Mentor Project. She was also involved in Ping Chong’s Undesirable Elements series. Her essays have been published in HowlRound and the Latino Rebels’ Bolder Anthology. She is thrilled to be working with Letter of Marque on her ensemble play, GIRL.
